The Story of Robin Hood & Why OutlawQueen Deserved Better

Regina, I’m not afraid of you!

Who would have thought there’d be someone ready to go toe to toe with her majesty, the Evil Queen? Someone, unwilling to relent, not when faced with threats to his life; not when insulted and especially not when being hissed at as though he is facing a cornered wildcat. And who would have expected that out of all people, Robin Hood, the Prince of Thieves, would be the one person to believe in Regina, to give her new hope and to make her feel loved again? The woman, who ripped out the hearts of her enemies, who did unspeakable things, who even killed her own father; the woman who wears attitude as an amour and wields sarcasm as if it were a blade. After the terrible loss that led to Regina being forced to marry King Leopold, she decided to protect herself from pain and suffering and therefore to never open herself up again to anyone. It was a long way from Season 1, where we first got to meet Regina, the heartless, ruthless woman, whose favorite job, apparently, was to be cruel in so many ways, when deep down all she probably wanted was to have somebody who cared about her, who loved her. (Yet, she still sent her own son to a shrink – no offence Archie – in a desperate attempt to keep him from the truth about her curse, which she knew would tear them apart). Only after most of season 1, we discovered what caused Regina’s pain: The terrible way in which Daniel was killed by her own motherright beforeher eyes. We got to see the innocent, loving and bright heroine woman who didn’t give a damn about social standing who saved a girl she knew nothing about, only to receive such cruel punishment. A woman now buried deep beneath layers of power plays, prophecies, ambition (more of others then her own), manipulation and an unhealthy hunger for revenge.

From here, let’s skip to season 3B, when the Evil Queen was heartbroken after losing Henry, her little boy, whom she loves more than anything in the world, for whom she decided to change, to become a better person, so she’d be worthy of being his mother, and whom she had let go into a life where the memories they had shared belonged to him and his other mother.Once again she sacrificed the thing she loved most, but this time not for vengeance, this time she made the sacrifice to save everyone – the sacrifice of a hero (in making). That’s when she met a certain thief called Robin Hoodupon everyone’s return to the Enchanted Forest, an outlaw who “smelled like forest”. From the very first moment on, one could see that even though Regina denied it -and boy that woman knows denial like no other-, there was some (ok, a LOT of) chemistry and attraction between these two. Back in Storybrooke, when everybody was trying to hunt down the Wicked Witch – or B*tch whatever suits you -, Robin was the one to support and protect her, and even though she barely knew him, she trusted him enough to give him her heart … literally – the “rip it out and put it into a satchel to hide it under a tree”-kind of literally. Right from the start, their chemistry was like electricity charging up the air around them.Let’s just think back to their first meeting in the farmhouse and how they almost kissed – as he reached for the “love potion of sorts” after having shot an arrow at her head-, or the way Robin looked at her when he read that letter and described her as “stunning in every way”. So, the most unexpected thing happened –the Evil Queen fell in love again with no other than Robin “tear your walls down” Hood. Although things were a little tough at the beginning, with Regina running away as soon as she saw Robin’s famous Lion Tattoo and trying to put some distance between them, she soon realized that she just couldn’t stay away from him and that he there was something about him that makes it hard for her to not trust him and open herself up again. As we learned in a flashback when Tink and Regina visited the tavern, it turned out that Robin – the man with the lion tattoo – is her soulmate; he is the one that Regina was destined to be with. So, the Evil Queen finally found her happy ending … right?

However, it seems like the producers had a different fate in mind for Regina. We guess they must have been on drugs, drunk or high … Probably all three. We can’t find any other explanation for bringing Marian back into the story, who was later revealed to be Regina’s wicked and presumably dead half-sister, Zelena. While a heartbroken Regina tried to get back to her normal life in Storybrooke, Robin moved on pretty quickly, choosing to leave for New York with his ex-wife and son, to save said presumably cursed ex, after previously having chosen to be with Regina. Convenient timing, right? To ease his “pain” over the separation, the writers then decided to screw the foundations of the #OutlawQueen love story and also of Robin’s character, trying to sell to the audience that his honor compelled him to delete Regina’s contact from his phone, turning on her and everything they stood for, just to scratch an itch by sleeping with Marian/ Zelena and getting her pregnant. (There is Skype, you know, and something called travelling and what about HOPE? Because hey, this is the “World Without Magic” – that sometimes conveniently can have magic as a plot devise). And all that, while Regina was “undercover” with the Queens of Darkness, so she could change fate and find her happy ending. But, back on track…Since back then Robin didn’t even know that Zelena was Marian, the Wicked Witch –B*tch – basically raped Robin – and, before you roast us for roasting Zelena, THIS has nothing to do withBexMader, she is so precious and does an amazing job playing Zelena, we just don’t like her character anymore after EVERYTHING she did- (and most of the stuff she says when she thinks she’s thinking) …
But let’s not get into this skin crawling storyline, the mere thought of it makes us feel the very distinct need to schedule a DEF CON3 meeting for our last meal with the closest restroom there is. (What? Not only queens get to be refined.)Anyway, since Regina and Robin truly love each other (even though they never said it out loud, for no reason), they decided to not let Zelena and the baby get between them and to keep fighting for each other. Us #OutlawQueen – fans had our favorite couple back and … well, wewould say enjoyed seeing them back together on screen, but unfortunately, they didn’t have much screen time together anymore. It’s like the producers got tired of the couple and decided to shove the never again truly addressed abuse of Robin repeatedly into our faces, by squishing Zelena into most of the screen time those two had left. How comes Regina gets punished for every single bad thing she ever did, while Zelena keeps getting away with every sh*t and still continues to blame others for things that are not their fault only because she feels she deserves to have something that was never hers to begin with? Amongst others, she went back in time to kill the real Marian, after all, and deceived Robin and still ended up receiving special treatment while unable to shut her jealous mouth. But, from an #OutlawQueen fan perspective, only a few scenes together are still better than nothing, right? Because what happened then was pretty shocking, not only for us, but also for the actors themselves: Robin sacrificed himself to safe his true love, who followed him to save THE very child she would have had every right not to give a damn about. Seriously? Let’s summarize this again: Regina finds happiness, her happy ending, her true love, and for what? To lose love again? To find her next true love/ soulmate? How many do you think she has? And then there is the aspect of separating Roland from Regina, the only woman he’s ever really known as a mother figure. And how comes he is so absolutely ok with being around Zelena? How comes the Merry Men let her even close to him? Well, it’s bad writing, with the main goal of saving production costs to send actors away, so new ones could be cast for storylines that have neither proper development nor closure in the following season. Really, maybe someone should get them a dictionary, so they can look up the terms “closure”, “conclusion”, “happy ending” and “logic”.

The producers apparently noticed their big mistake, because why else would they ask Sean Maguire to come back for a short story arch in the current season? However, the reaction among fans went from “I’m so glad that #OutlawQueen will be reunited”, over “I don’t want to get my expectations too high” to “Please don’t mess it up this time” and “they’ve already ruined their relationship so much, let Regina move on with someone else” (and “yay, he’s dead, let’s make SwanQueen happen”, but let’s not get into that). Well, let’s just stick with the reaction, to please NOT mess it up again, because we feel like this is pretty much what they are doing right now. Seriously people, whatever you’re taking, get rid of the stuff; it’s not working out for you. When 6×11 aired, first thing we did, even before watching the whole episode, was to watch all the #OutlawQueen scenes, being pretty happyabout the story they decided to go with. Regina and Robin were reunited and even though it was clear to us that this is not the Robin we knew before, you could see that there was a certain chemistry between them: The way that Regina looked at him when she first saw him (or pretty much every time she saw him), the look that Robin gave her when Regina welcomed him to Storybrooke, the small smiles they exchanged, the fact that Robin was willing to take the risk to follow Regina through the magic tree back to the real world and, the best thing of the whole episode, the hug they shared when Robin made it through the tree. The heartfelt statement about wanting to get to know the woman one version of had been willing to die for. It all seemed like they might eventually go back to the couple we once knew and loved so much.

But then there was 6×12 and we honestly can’t remember the last time we’ve been this disappointed by a story line … Oh wait, we can actually … It was, when fake Marian was brought back. And when Robin left Regina to go to New York with fake Marian. And when Marian/ Zelena got pregnant. Did we miss something? Oh yes, when Robin was killed by Hades. Anyway, let us explain why this episode was so disappointing for #OutlawQueen fans: Ok, at first, it was quite funny to see how Robin tries to get used to modern life in Storybrooke, dealing with technology like the “demon box screaming at him” and let’s be honest, the way he punched Nottingham was pretty impressive. (Still, could have been better if it was the old Robin, who got to know what Nottingham tried to do to Regina.) Anyways, it is interesting to see this new side of Robin, a bit darker, not very honorable and kind of enticing with his bad boy style. Still, what happened afterwards isn’t what we, as fans, would like to see. What was this kiss about? Where did all the chemistry and passion go that these two characters had in the previous seasons? At the very same place where, two seasons earlier, Regina and Robin shared theHOTTEST scenes of the whole series … And now, nothing … Except, of course, a moment that is so tense, stiff and awkward, that you really want to look away. In some way, it was to be expected that there might be less chemistry in the beginning, since Robin is not the same person, but what the hell was that? You let Robin kiss Regina and then – sh*t hit the fan – she realizes that she didn’t feel anything because it is not her Robin? And come on, letting Robin steal Regina’s box? Seriously? Doesn’t really sound like the man we knew and who only one episode before decided to give up his old life to make a new start with “the woman one version of him was willing to die for.” If you care about a person, even just the tinniest bit, you don’t steal from them. What is your plan now; making Regina realize that this is not the Robin she knew and loved and wish that he would go back to his world? Is this the kind of closure you want to bring? We think that this will not bring closurebut will – once more – only lead to broken hearts for us fans and mostly for Regina. Hasn’t she suffered enough already? At this point, like many fans said, it would have been better to just keep him dead and let Regina grieve instead of reopening old wounds and making her suffer again. Even the Hook managed to get his happy ending, and the man held a grudge for 300 years. It’s almost as if the writers/producers only brought Robin back to rub more salt to the wound in a way of, “You want him? You shall have him, but you’re going to regret wanting him back”.

Regina has been through so much and finally deserves her happy ending – no closure, but a happy ending, which should include a life with her soulmate. Regina once said that the closest feeling to happiness was when it was just her, Henry, Robin Hood and Roland and that she wants to get back to that. Yes, we want that too, for us, and especially for Regina, she deserves a happy ending more than any character on this show.

The last thing that we wanted to mention is that we feel pretty sorry for Lana and Sean who have to go along with that crappy storyline, but they still make the best out of it and they deserve a lot of respect for that! They have developed an incredible friendship and hit off on screen from day one. And now, to be set back like thismust be challenging for them as well. However, their performances, once again show their incredible talent and the wide range in which they can work with their craft. Having the fourth versions of their characters meet (because you can’t deny that the sixth season has not also changed Regina) in a different setting, with a different starting point and they still put in so much the audience hasn’t seen before – body language, posture, the look in their eyes, their chemistry… or the lack thereof/ suppressed existence thereof. One word: Chapeau!

So, despite everything, it was amazing to have our timelines of Twitter and Instagram blessed with new #Seana pictures during this short story arch and as much as we wanted to have a permanent return of Sean Maguire, thank you for at least bringing back these two – even if it was only temporary.

LONG LIVE OUTLAWQUEEN (preferably pre-season 4A finale canon, because that could have been resolved.)
